MARIAN WINTERS
Tony Award-winning actress writes letter to John Willis, editor of Theatre World, regretting not being able to attend that year's award ceremony
Autograph letter signed: "Marian Winters" in blue ink. 1 page, 5¾x4. In full: "Dear John Willis - How frustrating to be getting home too late for the festivities. I'll have to arrange things better for next year. Warm regards". Actress Marian Winters (1924-1978) is best known for her work on the Broadway stage; she made her debut understudying for actress Frances Dee in The Secret Room (1945), and went on to perform in the comedy Dream Girl (1951). Winters achieved fame for her role as Natalia Landauer in I Am a Camera (1951) for which she was awarded a Tony Award in 1952 for Best Supporting of Featured Actress as well as a Theatre World Award. She is also remembered for playing Gelda in The Dark is Light Enough (1978) which would be her final role. Furthermore, Winters frequently appeared on television in guest roles in series such as The Defenders (1962), Hawk (1966), and Great Performances (1971). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Toned. Edges and corners slightly worn. Slight stained. Otherwise, fine condition.
