MARIE DRESSLERVintage sepia-toned cabinet card photo by John H. Ryder of actress Marie Dressler from the waist up in a dark dress, gloves and hat, signed with five measures of Auld Lang Syne Autograph music quotation on photograph signed "Auld Lang Syne/[five measures of music]/Marie Dressler". B/w sepia-toned, 3¾x5½ photo mounted on 4x6½ card with rounded corners. Card and photo are mounted to a 4¼x6½ gold-colored sheet of heavy cardstock with beveled edges. Cabinet card-style photograph from John H. Ryder, High Art Photographer, of Cleveland, Ohio. Dressler (1868-1934, born Leila Marie Koerber in Coburg, Ontario, Canada) was already a star of vaudeville and the Broadway stage when she made her film debut opposite Charlie Chaplin in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914). She preferred stage roles for many years, but returned to film stardom (a top box office draw) in the early 1930s. She won the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill (1931) and was nominated for the same award the next year for Emma. Lightly toned, foxed, silvered and creased. Signature and music quotation are lightly faded in places but legible. Song title is faded but legible. Light tear in photo at right edge. Light nick in bottom right corner of card. Light dents in top left corner. Light impressions on image.
