MARIE DRESSLER
Signed autograph note (undated), thanking a friend for seeing her off
Autograph Letter signed: "Marie Dressler", 2 pages, 5¼x4 (front and verso). To "My Dear Howard", in full: "It was indeed nice of you to come & see me off & I am sorry I could not pay you all attention. But I really was at a loss how to handle photographers, newspapermen & friends. It was nice to see you. Best to fondly". Marie Dressler (1868-1934) was already a star of vaudeville and the Broadway stage when she made her film debut opposite Charlie Chaplin in Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914). She preferred stage roles for many years, but returned to film stardom (a top box office draw) in the early 1930s. She won the Best Actress Oscar for Min and Bill (1931) and was nominated for the same award the next year for Emma. The letter was probably written to Howard Strickling, head of publicity at MGM and a close friend of Dressler's. When she learned she was dying of cancer, Dressler gave her Oscar statuette to Stricklin. Paperclip crease and stain at center top. Otherwise, fine condition.
