MARIE HALL
Considered to be the foremost woman violinist of her time, signed on this 3½x5 photograph dated in 1938!
Postcard Photograph signed: "Marie Hall/1938" (originally signed "1908", the "3" has been written over the "0"). B/w, 3½x5. British postcard, captioned at lower margin. On verso, an unidentified signer has written five lines of a poem by Christina Rossetti. English violinist Marie Hall (b. 1884), who was discovered as a teenager while performing on the streets to help earn a living for her family, studied in London and Prague before making her stage debut in Prague in 1902. After making her London debut in 1903, Hall, who was considered the foremost woman violinist of her time, toured worldwide, attracting a large following of fans in Europe, the U.S. and South Africa. Hall is perhaps best known for her masterful playing of Lark Ascending, written by Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), based on a poem by English poet George Meredith (1828-1904). Williams had first written Lark Ascending in 1914, and Hall, who had collaborated with him on the work, which was dedicated to her, first performed it in a violin-piano arrangement in December 1920 and then debuted it with full orchestration in 1921. Hall also had at least one other work dedicated to her: Plantation Dance (1931) by composer Albert Sammons (1886-1957), who was known as "The English Kreisler". Slightly creased. Front is lightly soiled. Verso is dampstained at perimeter, obliterating the end of the signer's name and the first line of the poem. Otherwise, fine condition.
