MARIE LLOYD
The popular British stage actress and singer signs her name in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours Sincerely/ Marie Lloyd" in black ink. 5¼x1¼ clipping. Marie Lloyd (1870-1922) was an English music hall singer, comedienne and musical theatre actress during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, best known for her song performances of "The Boy I love is Up on the Gallery", "My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)", and "Oh Mr. Porter What Shall I Do", as well as her clever use of innuendo and double entendre during her performances; she was often referred to as "Queen of the Music Hall". After a successful career on London's West End, she rose to international stardom when she made a tour from 1894 to 1900 through France, America, Australia and Belgium with her solo music hall act, and during WWI, became a big wartime recruitment advocate and morale-booster. Lloyd's personal life was subject to much press attention, she was married three times, twice divorced and frequently found giving court testimony against two of her husbands who ha physically abused her. She suffered from bouts of ill-health and became alcohol dependent, and fell ill onstage in 1922 after giving her final performance, dying only a few days later at the age of 52. Toned. Irregularly cut. Ink notes on bottom in unknown hand. Soiled and stained throughout. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
