MARIETTA HOLLEY
Extremely rare signature from the humorist and woman's right
activist, signing with her name and her psuedonym, "Josiah Allen's Wife"
Signature: "Marietta - Holley/Josiah Allen's Wife", in 4½x3½.
A female humorist often compared to Mark Twain, author Marietta Holley
(1836-1926) was a best seller in the 19th century, publishing 28 of her
works in various forms, ranging from articles, to novels, to poems. She was
a great supporter of women's rights, with many of her pieces focusing on the
subject, in particular the stories of Samantha, "Josiah Allen's Wife", of
which she was known for throughout her career. She would often sign with
the moniker "Josiah Allen's Wife" in letters and autographs, and often used
it when declining invitations for public speaking events due to her shyness.
Ironically, Holley never married, and instead became one of the most
important woman's suffragists of the 19th century, being close friends with
Susan B. Anthony and Clara Barton. Some of her books include My Opinions
and Betsey Bobbet's (as "Josiah Allen's Wife), Samantha at Saratoga or
Flirtin' with Fashion, Samantha on the Woman Question, and
Josiah Allen on the Woman Question. Toned. Corners lightly worn.
Fine condition.
