Signature of the record-setting Canadian long distance swimmer
Typed Sentiment signed: "Sincerely,/Marilyn Bell", 4½x1. Clipped from the close of a letter. Canadian long-distance swimmer Marilyn Bell (later Di Lascio), born in 1937, became the first person to swim across Lake Ontario in 1954. Unhappy that a Canadian organization had offered a $10,000 prize to English Channel-crosser Florence Chadwick, Bell swam the distance the same night, braving high waves and attacks by lamprey eels. Bell finished the 32-mile swim; Chadwick did not. In 1955, Bell became the youngest person to swim across the English Channel, and in 1956 she crossed the Strait of San Juan de Fuca. Named Canada's Newsmaker of the Year and Athlete of the Year (1954), she was enshrined in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (1958). A film, Heart: the Marilyn Bell Story, was made for TV in 2001. Signature slightly haloed, but legible. Stain under signature. Crease on left margin. Small tear on top edge. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
