Marilyn Horne (b. 1934) once called "the greatest singer in the world" by
"Opera News" magazine, had made her debut at age 20 with the Los Angeles Guild
Opera in 1954. She made her first appearance with Joan Sutherland in 1961 and
teamed up with her again in 1969. In 1990, Horne and Sutherland were
reunited again for Sutherland's final performance at Covent Garden in The
Magic Flute, in which Sutherland sang duets with Horne and Lucianno
Pavarotti. After her debut at the Met in the role of Adalgisa, Horne performed
several times there, opening the 1972/1973 season in Carmen and bringing
Handel's Rinaldo to the Met in 1984, the first time a Handel opera was
ever performed there. Horne, who is considered a definitive interpreter of
Rossini, was married to conductor Henry Lewis from 1960-1974. Pencil notes
(unknown hand). Corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
