First Day Cover signed: "Mario Puzo", 6½x3½. FDC celebrating a public
that reads, five stamps (4 designs) in the "roots of democracy" series affixed,
postmarked Saint Louis, Missouri, December 8, 1977, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE.
Mario Puzo (1920-1999) is best known for his 1969 novel, The
Godfather, which sold more than 21 million copies and remained on the
bestseller list for 67 weeks. In 1972 and 1974, Puzo won Academy Awards for Best
Adapted Screenplay for The Godfather and The Godfather Part
II. Puzo had also worked on the screenplays for a number of other
Hollywood films, including Earthquake (1974), Superman (1978),
Superman II (1980) and The Cotton Club (1984). His 1996 novel,
The Last Don, was made into a television miniseries (1997). In 1998, the
year before Puzo died, the American Film Institute named The Godfather
one of the three greatest American films ever made. Fine
condition.
