The accomplished author pens short quote, signs penname in black ink

Autograph quotation signed: "Marion Harland" in black ink. 1 page, 4½x7. Written on personal stationary. Brooklyn, New York City. March 10, 1886. In full: "It is better to trust than to/ hope; fortitude is a nobler/ virtue than bravery". Mary Virginia Terhune (1830-1922), who also was known by her penname Marion Harland, was an American author. She began her career with her first novel Alone (1854) and would go on to sell 100,000 copies; her early work consisted of best-selling women's fiction novels (including Colonel Floyd's Wards (1866), True As Steel (1872), and The Carringtons of High Hill (1919))as well as numerous serial works, short stories and magazine essays. She married Presbyterian minister Edward Payson Terhune in 1856 and had six children, abruptly publishing a cookbook and domestic guide for housewives Common Sense in the Household: A Manual for Practical Housewifery in the 1870s. Although she continued to write novels, she began to publish additional cookbooks and domestic works, as well as biographies, travel guides and histories, and even began speaking as a public lecturer and was the first woman admitted to the Virginia Historical Society. As she got older her novels stopped, but she continued to write alongside her children, who would go on to become notable authors themselves. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Toned stains throughout. Slightly soiled. Corners rounded. Ink notes in bottom margin in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
