MARJORIE PROOPS
The English "agony aunt" signs an abstract art-style self-caricature.
Self-Caricature signed: "All good wishes/Marjorie Proops", 4½x5.
She has drawn a highly stylized self-caricature. Printed caption affixed
in lower right. Marjorie Proops (1911-1996), née Israel, was a
personal advice columnist for Britain's Daily Mirror, what the British
call an "agony aunt." She used her column to promote causes, too, such as
more compassionate treatment of rape victims. Proops wrote two memoirs,
Pride, Prejudice and Proops (1975) and Dear Marge (1975).
Honored with an OBE (1969), she was named Woman of the Year in
1984. Heavily toned. Adhesive residue on bottom margin. Light surface
creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
