MARK DAWSON
Dawson, an early winner of a Theatre World award, sends Editor John
Willis his regrets for the 1973 party.
Autograph Letter signed: "Mark Dawson", 1 page, 5½x3¼,
postcard, addressed in his hand on verso, postmarked Jamesburg, New Jersey,
May 3, 1973. To "Dear John" [Willis], in full: "I
will be out of New York during that week. Wish I could be there. Theatre World
deserves only the best. Thank you". Mark Dawson (1920-2007) appeared
in 10 Broadway shows, almost all musical comedies and mostly hits, between 1942
and 1972. He won a Theatre World Award for High Button Shoes (1947-1948).
Among his other productions were By Jupiter, Fiorello! and
Twigs. He appeared occasionally on television over four decades from
1951, and played supporting roles in a few feature films (Heart Like a
Wheel, 1983). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World
from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until
2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians
of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World
Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards.
Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in
Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Toned at edges.
