Classical pianist Mark Hambourg (1879-1960), born in Russia, emigrated to
England in 1889, escaping persecution by the czar. Soon he was recognized as a
prodigy, lionized by British society. He made his first world tour in 1895, at
age 16, cut his first record in 1909, and remained popular through the 1930s. He
played a down and out pianist in the film The Common Touch (1941). Worn.
