MARK HELLINGER
The journalist writes about a upcoming actor on Daily Mirror
letterhead, signs name in pencil
Typed letter signed: "Mark" in pencil. 1 page, 8½x9¼. New
York, Friday afternoon, no date. On stationery of the newspaper, Daily
Mirror, 235 East 45th Street, New York. To Lew. In full: "You
once sent me a wire in relation to Louis B------. You asked to see him without
the ginger ale. Here he is. I put him with Paramount last September. His salary
with Loew had been $12 a week and Paramount raised the ante to $15. The success
must have gone to his head, however, because he was last week discovered
interviewing actors and actresses - and running a casting office of his own on
the side. He was very promptly fired. But his explanation to me seems perfectly
logical. His work in the mail room was pretty dull and he thought it would be
much nicer to become an executive. So, while possible stars of the future were
waiting to see the casting director, Louis interviewed them and shook his head
rather dubiously. Thus did the days pass more quickly. Seriously, Lewis, the boy
is bright, alert and full of Yiddish sense. He'll more than pay you back in
laughs. If you can use him in your office, hire him. I can assure you that you
won't go wrong. Love." Journalist MARK HELLINGER (1903-1947) was a
prominent journalist and columnist who also wrote short stories and wrote and
produced several Broadway revues and plays. He also wrote for films and produced
them as well. A Broadway theatre is named in his honor. Lower portion
with name and address of recipient torn off. Shaded at edges, lower horizontal
fold shows separation at left and right blank margins. Dark pencil file note at
upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
