MARK HELLINGER
The renowned theatre critic and writer sends letter of thanks to a
colleague, signs name in black ink
Typed note signed: "Mark Hellinger" in black ink. 1 page,
7¼x10½. Written on personal stationary. New York City, New York. September 14,
1934. Addressed to Leonard L. Levinson of Los Angeles, California. In
full: "Though I am unable to use the enclosed contributions, it goes
without saying that I appreciate them just the same. Thanks for thinking of me.
And let me keep hearing from you". Mark Hellinger (1903-1947) was
a theatre critic for several New York newspapers, beginning in 1923.
Eventually syndicated in 174 newspapers, he substituted his own short stories
for commentary in some of his columns. A friend to entertainment figures like
Walter Winchell, Texas Guinan and Flo Ziegfeld, he was also friendly with mob
figures like Dutch Schulz and Legs Diamond. The latter proved useful when he
began to produce - and in some cases write - noir films, beginning with Jimmy
Cagney's The Roaring Twenties (1939). Other Hellinger
productions included High Sierra and The Naked City.
(The latter, released after Hellinger's death, was also narrated by him.) He won
the Mystery Writers' Edgar for best film, The Killers, in 1947.
Hellinger died young of a congenital heart condition.
