Mark O. Hatfield sends an autograph letter to Senator Patrick Moynihan of thanks for the encouraging words for embarking on a new career.
Autograph Letter signed: "Mark" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 5x3¾. On personal Senate card. No place, 1995 December 7. To "Dear friend Patrick" [Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan]. In full: "Your generosity and comments re my leaving for a new career [1 word illegible] me - deepest thanks. You have been a wonderful role model for me and a great spokesman for great causes. I'll miss you." Hatfield was Republican Governor of Oregon (1959-1967) before being elected to the U.S. Senate (1967-1997). A political maverick and author of several books, he retired from active politics at the end of his fifth term to return to teaching political science. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper right. Otherwise, fine condition.
