MARK O. HATFIELD
Mark O. Hatfield sends a typed letter of thanks for the words of
encouragement.
Typed Letter Signed: "Mark O. Hatfield", 1p, 7¼x10½. Salem,
Oregon, 1964 July 28. On his personal letterhead to Mr. Carson C.
Hathaway, Silver Springs, Maryland. In full: "Yours was a most
refreshing communication, and I am deeply grateful for your reaction to my
participation in the Convention, especially amid the brickbats which were
forthcoming. Your words will buoy my spirits and renew my faith in the public
conscience as the interpretations of my remarks are made in various ways in the
coming months. It seemed appropriate to me that we take a good long look down
the path ahead, not just for an immediate election, but with the course of our
country itself fully in mind. There have been many requests for copies of my
Keynote Address, and I have delayed my reply to your letter so that I might
enclose a printed copy of the complete text. In appreciation," Mark Odom
Hatfield (born in 1922) was Republican Governor of Oregon (1959-1967, the
state's first two-term Governor in the 20th century) before being elected to the
U.S. Senate (1967-1997, passing the state's record for a Senate term in
1993). A political maverick and the author of several books, he retired from
active politics at the end of his fifth term (January 1997) to return to
teaching political science. Fold creases not near signature. Fine
condition.
