Autograph Note Signed: "For Margaret Cartwright/with warmest regards/Mark Van
Doren/9-9-48", 5x3 card. Poet, playwright and literary critic Mark Van Doren (1894-1972)
won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1940 for his Collected Poems. He taught at Columbia
for nearly forty years, and was a staunch advocate of liberal education and of the "great books"
movement. Van Doren wrote literary studies of Shakespeare and Hawthorne, among others.
He was the brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Carl Van Doren, and the father
of Charles Van Doren, caught in the rigged quiz show scandals of 1959. Lightly toned.
