Poet, playwright and literary critic Mark Van Doren (1894-1972) won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1940 for his Collected Poems. He taught at Columbia for nearly forty years, and was a staunch advocate of liberal education and of the "great books" movement. Van Doren wrote literary studies of Shakespeare and Hawthorne, among others. He was the brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Carl Van Doren, and the father of Charles Van Doren, caught in the rigged quiz show scandals of 1959. Lightly toned. Irregularly cut edges. Fine condition.
