mount. 5x¾ card affixed to 16½x12 b/w photo (12x14¾ image) mounted on cardstock.
Engraved in gold ink in bottom right corner: "Fabian Bachrach". Typed card in bottom left
card: "Mark Van Doren/Writer". Poet, author and critic Van Doren (1894-1972, born in
Hope, Illinois) won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for Collected Poems, 1922-1938. A teacher at
Columbia University from 1920 to1959, Van Doren also wrote novels, short stories, a play
(The Last Days of Lincoln, 1959), critical studies of various authors, including John Dryden
(1920) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (1946), an autobiography and memoirs of his wife, writer
and novelist Dorothy Graffe Van Doren, as well as serving on the staff of "The Nation"
(1924-1928; 1935-1938). Van Doren's literary family also included his brother, Carl, who
also taught at Columbia and with whom he wrote, American and British Literature Since
1890 (1939). Van Doren's son, Charles, also had a claim to fame: he was the winner of the
rigged TV game show Twenty-One. Lightly toned, soiled and bowed. Tape residue along
edges and on verso (no show-through). Paper loss on verso. Small piece missing from top left
corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
