MARLON BRANDO
1973 Time cover about Last Tango in Paris, signed by star Marlon Brando. This cover was published five days before the movie was released to most of the American market. Brando received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Last Tango in Paris.
Magazine cover signed "Marlon/Brando". Color, 8x10¾. Jan. 22, 1973 cover of Time magazine. Cover story: "Sex and Death in Paris/MARLON/BRANDO/in/'LAST/TANGO'". Last Tango in Paris (1973) was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and starred Brando. It's infamous for its sex scenes, which were explicit enough to earn it an X rating (reclassified as NC-17 in 1997). Brando and Bertolucci both received Oscar nods for Last Tango in Paris. It had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 14, 1972, about three months before this cover was published, and was released to the rest of the United States on Jan. 27, 1973, five days after this cover was published. Brando (1924-2004, born Marlon Brando, Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska) was nominated for the 1989 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (A Dry White Season) and for seven Academy Awards for Best Actor: 1951 (A Streetcar Named Desire), 1952 (Viva Zapata!), 1953 (Julius Caesar), 1954 (On the Waterfront), 1957 (Sayonara), 1972 (The Godfather) and 1973 (Last Tango in Paris); he won in 1954 and 1972. He refused to accept the award for the title role in The Godfather because he believed that the United States and Hollywood were discriminating against the Indian people. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Adhesive residue in bottom left corner from address label. Tape residue and paper loss in top left corner. Light tears along left edge. Neatly torn from magazine along left edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
