MARLOW W. COOK
The Kentucky senator signs his typed letter to an admirer
Typed Letter signed: "Marlow Cook" as U.S. Senator from Kentucky, in blue ink, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1974 June 17. On letterhead of "United States Senate/Committee on Commerce" to Mr. Danny L. Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "Thank you so much for your nice letter of June 5. Needless to say, I appreciate your kind remarks. I will do my best to continue to justify your confidence and support. I have enclosed the photograph which you requested. However, I do not have campaign material available at this time. Perhaps if you contact me later in the summer I will be able to comply with your request. Again, thank you for your letter. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely". Photograph not present. Marlow Webster Cook (1926-2016) was appointed as U.S. Senator from Kentucky in 1968 to fill the unexpired term of Thruston B. Morton, who had resigned. Serving until December 1974, when he resigned, Cook was an unsuccessful candidate for election in his own right that same year. A WWII veteran and an attorney, Cook had previously served in the Kentucky State Legislature and as a Kentucky State Court Judge. In 2004, after retiring to Florida, Cook announced his support for Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry in a fiery editorial. Slightly creased with folds, not at signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
