Record signed: "Glen", "Cheers/Graham", "Sandy", "Allan", 7
diameter. Record for their single "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da". The Marmalade was
formed in Glasgow in 1961 when teens William Campbell (later Junior Campbell)
and Patrick Fairley formed the Gaylords. They played local clubs virtually for
free but, after some personnel changes - most notably the addition of singer
Dean Ford (real name Thomas McAleese), bassist Graham Knight and drummer Alan
Whitehead - found popularity in Scotland as Dean Ford & The Gaylords.
Their most notable gig was at London's Marquee Club, supporting the Action
and Pink Floyd, in 1965. The band changed their name to The Marmalade in
1967 and scored hits with a late-1968 cover of the Beatles' Ob-La-Di,
Ob-La-Da, which topped the U.K. charts, and 1969's Reflections of My
Life, which went to No. 1 in the United States and United Kingdom.
However, their commercial success came with a price. Their sound was
originally influenced by American soul and progressive and folk rock, but their
labels forced them to come up with more radio-friendly music; this, combined
with stress in the band and a change in their sound, led to the band shedding
many of its members. But The Marmalade was reorganized in the mid-1970s, with
Knight and Whitehead at the core surrounded by new blood. They released one more
top ten hit in the U.K. in 1977, the appropriately named Falling Apart at the
Seams. Fine condition.
