Check signed: "Marques Haynes" in blue ink, 6x2¾, encased in plastic with an authenticating
label to an overall size of 9½x4½. New York, N.Y., 1970 April 1. Check no. 158, drawn on
Haynes' personal account at the First Bank and Trust Company of Sand Springs, Oklahoma,
payable to Hartford Courant Newspapers for $120.48. Entirely filled out in Haynes' hand,
including the memo: "for ads (3) in Hart. Courant." Marques Haynes (1926-2015) played
for the Harlem Globetrotters (1946-1953) after finishing college. Then he formed his own
barnstorming team, the Harlem Magicians. Haynes, famed for his unmatched dribbling
skills, turned down offers to play in the NBA, and later returned to the Globetrotters as
player/coach. Amazingly, he played competitive basketball into his sixties, retiring in 1992. He
entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998. Haynes was born in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
Payee and memo lines slightly smudged. Normal bank stamps, one on verso showing through
faintly at signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
