MARQUESS OF EXETER
The member of the British peerage signs this letter revealing his opinion about a splinter organization
Typed Letter signed: “Exeter” 1p, 5x5 irregularly cut and affixed to a similarly-sized piece of paper. Burghley House, Stamford, Lincs, July 1, 1955. To “Dear Sir”. In full: “Thank you very much for your letter with reference to your scheme for a British Nationalist Party./ I trust you will forgive me if I say that in my opinion an organization such as you suggest can only sap the strength of the Conservative Party, whose policy is almost identical to yours. Splinter organizations never achieve anything but trouble. We have a striking example before us in the present situation between the T.U.C. and the Stevedores and Dockers Union./ Yours truly”. The Marquess of Exeter is a twice-created title which for the most part has been affiliated with the Cecil family. It is unclear which Marquess in the line of succession has written and signed this letter. Irregularly cut. Toned. Handwritten note from the collector toward the upper left-hand corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
