No place, April 13, no year. To "Sir", in full: "I shall be much obliged to you to send me by the cross post to Hatfield tomorrow evening the best impression of the comparative arms in war, and am your most obedient humble servant". James Cecil (1791-1868), the second Marquess of Salisbury was the Viscount of Cranborne before succeeding his father as Marquess in 1823. A Tory member of the House of Commons from 1813, he entered the House of Lords when he inherited the title. Salisbury was Lord Privy Seal (1852) and Lord President of the Council (1858-1859). His son, the third Marquess, would be British Prime Minister three times. As the printed attachment notes, he was the lineal descendent of Lord Robert Cecil, Secretary of State and trusted advisor of Queen Elizabeth I. 2-inch and 1½-inch tears at top. One horizontal fold. Worn. Creased. Light foxing. Ink notes (unknown hand) at blank margins of the 9¾x6½ page. Otherwise, fine condition.
