The Marshal of the Royal Air force signs a commemorative cover honoring another Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Sir Charles Portal. Extremely rare!
Commemorative envelope signed: "T.G. Pike", in blue ink, 6½x4½. Front portion of an envelope honoring the Marshal of the Royal Airforce, Viscount Portal of Hungerford. Stamped in black honoring the 50th Anniversary of the No. 3 Flying Training Squadron, 1978. Thomas G. Pike (1906-1983) was an officer in the Royal Air Force, formerly serving as Marshal of The Royal Air Force upon his retirement in 1967. Pike served in World War II and was appointed Officer Commanding No. 219 Squadron in 1941, where he exhibited great bravery and skill, destroying a raiding aircraft on his first night patrol and being awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions. Several other honors were placed upon him for his World War II service, including an appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a Legion of Merit from the U.S. Armed Forces, and a mention in dispatches. Upon the end of WWII, Pike remained in the Royal Air Force, servings in several different positions and commands, being promoted to Chief of Air Staff in 1961, followed by his appointment to Marshal of the Royal Air Force in 1962. After retiring, Pike was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Essex and served as President of the Royal Air Forces Association from 1969 to 1979. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slight surface creases. Edges slightly worn. Back half of envelope not present. Edges slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
