MARTA EGGERTH
A signature from the operetta star in black ink
Signature: "Marta Eggerth", in black ink, 5¾x3¾. Marta
Eggerth, born in Budapest (1912-2013), is a star of opera, operetta, and films
in 4 languages: German, Italian, French, and 2 films in English (For Me
and My Gal, 1942; Presenting Lily Mars, 1943). She performed in her
first operetta at age 11, and performed Die Fledermaus at age 17, already
able to sing the most difficult parts. In 1936 she married Polish tenor Jan
Kiepura, and the couple often performed together to great acclaim until his
untimely death 30 years later. They were especially noted for their over 200
joint performances of The Merry Widow. Eggerth has continued giving
concert performances into the new century, and recorded a 2-volume
retrospective CD, My Life My Song (2003). A staunch advocate of
operetta, Eggerth has said, "In opera everybody dies; in operetta everybody
is flirtatious." Heavily toned. Ink notes (unknown hand). Small tears on binding
holes. Fine condition.
