Oscar-nominated actress Martha Hyer wrote this note in response to an autograph request from a women's shelter in Las Vegas, adding "I hate that picture with the train- am replacing it with these".
Autograph note signed "Martha". 1 page, 8¼x10¾, on letterhead of the Temporary Assistance for Women (TAW) shelter in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hyer wrote this note at the bottom of a letter addressed to her by Sherry Susman of TAW.Typed letter from TAW in full: "Martha Hyer: Thanks to you and many like yourself, our Las Vegas Home for battered and abused women is going to be five years old. Now, may we ask a favor of you? Will you do us the honor of autographing the photos enclosed? We would be most grateful and you will have our kindest thoughts and sincerest gratitude. A self-addressed envelope for your convenience. Sincerely yours". Hyer's autograph reply: "I hate that picture with the train- am replacing it with these [not enclosed]- OK? Good luck on your good work-". This shelter, commonly known as Safe Nest, remains active in Las Vegas as Temporary Assistance for Domestic Crisis (TADC). TADC offers counseling services, public education in the schools, and other programs, in addition to temporary refuge. Martha Hyer (1924-2014) made her first film, Thunder Mountain, in 1947. She earned an Oscar nomination as a teacher smitten with Frank Sinatra in Some Came Running (1958). Other prominent roles included Battle Hymn (1956) and The Carpetbaggers (1964). She made many TV appearances, including multiple episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. She was also a screenwriter on Rooster Cogburn (1975), the last film produced by Hal Wallis (to whom she was married from 1966 until his death in 1986). Lightly toned and creased. Folded once horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
