MARTHA RAYE
Youthful image in lacy dress, inscribed to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul -/My best wishes to youse/Oh Boy/Martha/Raye". B/w, 8x10. Collector has ink stamped signature date on verso: July 1937. Singer, actress and comedienne Martha Raye (1916-1994, born in Butte, Montana) made her Broadway debut in 1934 and her first film in 1936. She had her own TV show (1953-1954) and many guest appearances. A tireless performer for American troops in three wars, billing herself as "Colonel Maggie", she was honored with the Academy of Motion Pictures' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1968) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1993). She was buried in the military cemetery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Goodman hoped his remarkable collection would remain in circulation, not gather dust in a library file. Corners lightly worn and creased. Signature lightly beaded but legible. Surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
