Photograph signed "Hello, there-/Martha/Raye" in purple ink. B/w sepia-toned, 5¼x6¾ overall, 4¾x6¼ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Lightly toned and bowed. Light crease along left edge. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Original mailing envelope from "Martha Raye/Photo Service" at Paramount Pictures, Hollywood, California to Genevieve Ritzel, New Hartford, New York. Postmarked Dec. 1, 1937. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Pinhead-sized stain near upper right corner. Flap has been opened neatly on left edge. Worn and rounded corners. Otherwise in fine condition. Singer, actress and comedienne Raye (1916-1994) made her Broadway debut in 1934 and her first film in 1936. She had her own TV show (1953-1954) and many guest appearances. A tireless performer for American troops in three wars, billing herself as "Colonel Maggie", she was honored with the Academy of Motion Pictures' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1968) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1993). She was buried in the military cemetery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
