Contract signed "Martha Raye", with two small riders stapled to contract and initialed "MR". Contract is 1 page, 8¼x12¼. Sept. 11, 1945. Artist's engagement contract no 14660P with M. C. A. Artists Ltd. This contract engaged Raye for a one-week run at the Downtown Theatre in Detroit, Michigan, beginning on Sept. 20, 1945 and for no more than 35 shows. In return, she was paid $6,000 plus half the gross box office receipts in excess of $30,000. Singer, actress and comedienne Raye (1916-1994, born in Butte, Montana) made her Broadway debut in 1934 and her first film in 1936. She had her own TV show (1953-1954) and many guest appearances. A tireless performer for American troops in three wars, billing herself as "Colonel Maggie", she was honored with the Academy of Motion Pictures' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1968) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1993). She was buried in the military cemetery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Lightly toned and creased. Staple holes in upper left corner. Folded thrice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
