Raye signed this typed document in 1943 to notify the cashier at Twentieth
Century-Fox Film Corporation that her pay should be sent to William Morris
Agency.
Document signed: "Martha Raye". With pencil notation in right corners
in unknown hand. 1 page, 8¼x10¾, on the letterhead of William Morris Agency.
Feb. 12, 1943. Letter to Cashier, Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corp.,
Beverly Hills. Raye notifies the studio that she has authorized the William
Morris Agency to accept delivery of checks and sums of money on her behalf, and
promises to indemnify the studio for any resulting loss or cost. Singer, actress
and comedienne Raye (1916-1994, born in Butte, Montana) made her
Broadway debut in 1934 and her first film in 1936. She had her own TV show
(1953-1954) and many guest appearances. A tireless performer for American troops
in three wars, billing herself as "Colonel Maggie", she was honored with the
Academy of Motion Pictures' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1968)
and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1993). She was buried in the military
cemetery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Two
binder holes at top. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
