MARTHA SHEPARD LIPPINCOTT
Extremely rare handwritten, signed letter from the poet and hymn
writer saying that she has received a copy of the recipients books and is
anxious to review them, but is disappointed she had to pay to read them, as
books are normally gifted to her
Autograph letter signed: "Martha Shepard Lippincott", in black
ink, 5x8 affixed to 7¼x10½ sheet. January 21, 1902. In part: "Dear
friend, I have received and I was very sorry to not receive "The Lyric Boulgh"
and "The Great Procession" to review, as I was anxious to review them on their
own account, and then I should liked to have had a chance to see a little more
of your style of work, in case you should ever publish a volume for me. But I do
not feel like buying books to review. I have never done so and have reviewed
many excellent books". Known by the title "Quaker Poetess", Martha
Shepard Lippincott (1867-1949) was an author, writing primarily poetry
and hymns during her career. Reportedly writing over 4,000 poems and
hymns, Lippincott published rarely, with one of her only reprinted
publications being Visions of Life. She never married and spent
most of her life in Pennsylvania, devoting herself to hymns and poems until her
death in 1949. Mailing fold. Toned. Edges irregularly cut. Slight surface
creases. Letter slightly soiled. Backing sheet irregularly cut. Tear to middle
left margin of letter at "some". Otherwise, fine condition.
