Autograph letter signed "Martin F. Tupper ". 4 pages, 4¼x7, written on black-edges mourning paper, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. In full: "My dear Durham, Read this, - isn't it satisfactory? _ I have written only to Mrs. Hope, - who will no doubt with Lady [illegible] find that way to your studio directly: so he [illegible]. Probably you may also have to do Mr. Hope's statue: He is the once owner of Mr [illegible] and it will be something for you, if you please much [illegible] of art. Always yours". With postscript onverso: "[illegible] they call, show them Alantor - & the 4 Quarters & Allbert, - as well as all else." This letter was written on the back of a letter from A. A. Hope of London, England, although it doesn't appear to be addressed to her. Hope wrote Tupper in order to ask who had made a statue of Tupper's daughter. Tupper (1810-1889, born in Albury, Surrey, England) was an English writer, playwright, poet and inventor. He's probably best known for Proverbial Philosophy, published in 1837. Filled with long moralizing proverbs written in blank verse, Proverbial Philosophy eventually went through 40 editions and sold over a million copies in America between 1837 and 1867. Lightly toned, stained and rippled. Light show-through from writing on verso. Folded once vertically and thrice horizontally. Otherwise in fine condition.
