MARTIN P. DURKIN
Signed photo, shown at his desk, writing on a note pad
Photograph signed: "Martin P. Durkin". B/w, 8x10. Martin Patrick Durkin (1894-1955) had been President of the Plumbers' and Pipe Fitters' Union, and served as Director of Labor for Illinois (1933-1941). In 1953, President Eisenhower chose Durkin, a Democrat, for Secretary of Labor in a Cabinet characterized as "Nine Millionaires and a Plumber." Durkin had hoped that Eisenhower would revise the Taft-Hartley Act, but was disappointed. He resigned after fewer than 8 months in office, the shortest tenure of any Secretary of Labor. Edges toned and lightly creased. Mounting residue and Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
