Eisenhower's Secretary of Labor thanks a New York man for sending a
card with Durkin's name written in Old English.
Typed Letter signed: "Martin P. Durkin" as Secretary of
Labor, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, 1953 June 3. On letterhead of the
U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Secretary addressed to Mr. Leo J.
Sylvor, New York, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Sylver: I have received
your recent letter, in which you enclosed a card with my name engrossed in the
"Old English" text. Thank you very much for this token of esteem. It is a
pleasure to autograph a photograph for your interesting collection. I am very
glad to send one to you [not included]. Sincerely yours," In 1953,
President Eisenhower chose Durkin, a Democrat, for Secretary of Labor in a
Cabinet characterized as "Nine Millionaires and a Plumber." Durkin had hoped
that Eisenhower would revise the Taft-Hartley Act, but was disappointed. He
resigned after fewer than 8 months in office, the shortest tenure of any
Secretary of Labor. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
