MARTINE CAROL, DANIEL GÉLIN
Signed program in English for their 1952 film Adorable Creatures, with a page-long commentary on the nature of women by director Christian-Jacque, Carol's future husband!
Program signed: "Martine Carol", "Daniel Gélin", 4 pages (front and verso, integral leaf), 8x10½. Signed on front cover. Carol is shown in a printed still from the film. There is a page-long printed comment by the film's director, Christian-Jacque, explaining what he wanted to reveal about women through this film. Christian-Jacque and Martine Carol were married from 1954 to 1959. Screen beauty MARTINE CAROL (1920-1967) starred in French films from the mid-1940s to mid sixties. Among her titles released in the US were Adorable Creatures (1952), Madame du Barry (1954), Lola Montes (1955) and Love and the Frenchwoman (1960). Carol survived four marriages, drug abuse, a suicide attempt (leaping into the Seine) and a kidnapping, only to die of a heart attack in Monte Carlo at age 46. DANIEL GÉLIN (1921-2002), expelled from college for being "uncouth," sold salted cod in a small shop before moving to Paris to study acting. Moving up rapidly from small parts, Gélin got his first starring role in July Rendezvous (1949). By the 1950s he was being cast in leading roles by France's well known directors, including Max Ophul and Jean Cocteau. In all he appeared in over 150 films. He was the father of actress Maria Schneider, but declined to acknowledge paternity. Like Carol, Gélin led a stormy personal life. Edges toned and creased. Corners and edges lightly worn. Otherwise fine condition.
