MARVIN & JOHNNY
Signed publicity photo of the original Marvin & Johnny, 1950s doo-wop group. A rare signature!
Inscribed printed photograph signed in ink: "To Charlie/a very wonderful guy/Marvin & Johnny", in blue ink. B/w, 8x10. Captioned for Universal Attractions in lower margin. It has yet to be determined if Phillips or Perry signed this photo. Doo-wop group Marvin & Johnny were a popular hit in the 1950s, most famous for their single, "Cherry Pie." A partnership with Marvin Phillips (b.1931), and Emory "Johnny" Perry (b.1928), the duo formed in 1954 in Los Angeles after playing gigs together as saxophonists for The Richard Lewis Band. Their hits include "Jo Jo," "How Long She Been Gone," and "Tick Tock." Their transition to R&B in the 1950s helped pave the way for developing blues artists around the country. After Melvin and Philips broke up, singer Jesse Belvin (1932-1960) toured with Phillips under the Marvin & Johnny name. Lightly bowed. Minor surface creases (not seen head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
