Signature: "Mary A. Ward", 3x2 card. English novelist and
social activist Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920) wrote novels which
explored changing moral norms. She often wrote under her married name, Mrs.
Humphrey Ward. Her novels Lady Rose's Daughter (1903) and The Marriage
of William Ashe (1905), were best sellers in the US, but her most
influential novel was Robert Ellsmere (1888), which explored the basis of
morality in an era when traditional religious strictures were loosening.
Ward emphasized the need for social action to help the poor, but opposed women's
suffrage. She was the first President of the Anti-Suffrage League (1908).
Ward was linked by birth and marriage to important British intellectuals,
including her uncle - poet Matthew Arnold - and the Huxleys. Mounting residue on
verso. Fine condition.
