MARY ANN MOBLEY
Mobley writes to her associate Phyllis Diller
Typed Letter Signed: "Mary Ann Mobley", 1 page, 7¼x10¼. No
place, but Beverly Hills, California, 1979 January 12. To comedienne and
actress Phyllis Diller. Begins: "Dearest Phyllis". In full:
"You are truly a special lady. I have enjoyed and respected you from afar,
but having a chance to be with you during the taping of 'All Star Secrets'
made me realize that you are even more spectacular then (sic, than) I had
imagined. I do hope that somehow we'll be able to stay in touch. We would
love to get together for dinner some night. Maybe we can do a spur-of-the-moment
thing. Our thanks to you and Ingrid for the names of the Astrologer and the
Hand-Writing Analyst. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again for
everything. Sincerely". With original stamped, typed mailing envelope.
Receipt stamp on front, pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. All Star
Secrets (1979) was a game show hosted by Bob Eubanks. In the year she
signed this letter, Mobley was appearing on General Hospital as Jonelle
Andrews, was on two airings of Circus of the Stars (#3 and #4) and guest
starred in two episodes of Fantasy Island. One of the few Miss Americas
(1959) to find success after winning the title, singer and actress MARY ANN
MOBLEY (1939-2014) has appeared in feature films, made-for-TV movies,
been a regular on several TV series and made guest appearances on a number of TV
shows. After making her film debut in 1964's Get Yourself a College Girl,
Mobley won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year - Female before
going on to star in two films with Elvis Presley (Girl Happy and
Harum Scarum, both 1965). Her other film credits include For Singles
Only (1968), and Mobley appeared in a long list of made-for-TV
movies. Her television credits include appearing in regular roles on
General Hospital (1979) and Diff'rent Strokes
(1985-1986) and guest co-hosting The Home Show (1992, 1993).
Mobley also had a recurring role on Falcon Crest (1988) and was
frequently seen on The New Hollywood Squares (1987, 1988, 1989) and
episodes of Fantasy Island and The Love Boat. Mobley has been
married to actor/talk show host GARY COLLINS since 1967. Their only child,
daughter MARY CLANCY COLLINS, became a television executive. Comedienne
PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012), known for her
outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that
featured frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about
her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries, got her big break in March
1955 (at age 37), when she debuted at San Francisco's Purple Onion club. A
subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar launched
her national career, which got a big boost after Bob Hope saw Diller in a
Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would appear in
three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who recorded her
first comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny hausfrau" act
to nightclubs and television variety shows and specials and she also appeared on
the big screen. Her feature film credits include Splendor in the Grass
(1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (1966),
The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the Hams (1994), and
she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life (1998). Despite
retiring from nightclub/stage tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller
continued to make films (Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It,
2005) and occasionally appear on TV programs, including two episodes of 7th
Heaven (2002, 2003) and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady Show (2004).
