Nov 22, 1805/'Age with stealing steps/Hath claw'd me in his clutch/Hamlet",
6½x2¾.Mary Anne Keeley (1805-1899), née Goward, made her
London stage debut in the opera Rosina (1825), but soon gave up vocal
work to specialize in drama. She married Robert Keeley in 1829; the
couple often performed together, and toured the US in 1836. Her
breakthrough year was 1838, when she starred successively in The Last Days of
Pompeii and Nicholas Nickleby, but she would be remembered forever in
the title role of Jack Sheppard (1839). This story of a prison-breaking
felon was considered so dangerous that it was subsequently banned by the Lord
Chamberlain. Keeley's 90th birthday was celebrated with a gala at the
Lyceum, which she had managed with her husband in the 1840s. Worn. Light foxing.
Lightly creased. One vertical fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
