MARY ASTOR
The actress handwrites and signs this letter to her agent, Gloria Safier, asking her to double-check if any acting parts in commercials are available since she turned down a "Gunsmoke" at $2,000
Autograph letter signed: "Mary" in black ink. Accompanied by typed, unsigned letter from Gloria Safier. Malibu, California, August 21, 1964. Written on personal letterhead to "Dear Gloria-" in full: "Here I come, complaining again- please check up on your commercial contacts again, huh? I turned down a "Gunsmoke" at $2,000, but there's a Fred MacMurray show in mid-Sept at $1500 that I'll have to take if I can't count on some voice-overs coming up- and money coming in- The book is going beautifully- I think. I'm about at the half-way mark. Got a note from Lee saying he likes 'The Emerald Ocean' for a title- I do too- Love". Mary Astor (1906-1987) had a successful silent screen career, costarring with John Barrymore in Beau Brummell (1923) and Don Juan (1926). Her career was threatened by tabloid scandals in the 1930s, including a very contentious divorce, but she moved on to even greater film success in the talking era. She won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying chain-smoking concert pianist Sandra Kovak in Warner Bros.' The Great Lie, which starred Bette Davis. That same year, she costarred with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. Astor wrote five novels (one of which she mentions in this letter). Her autobiography and subsequent film memoir were both best sellers. Lightly toned. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased on bottom and top edges. Corners rounded. Holes from staple in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
