MARY ASTOR
Standard AFTRA contract for Astor's appearance in the Playhouse 90 episode "The Return of Ansel Gibbs" (1958), with a multiply initialed rider. Also signed by Leo Lefcourt on behalf of CBS
Contract Signed: "Mary Astor" as performer, "Leo Lefcourt" representing CBS, 1 page 8½x11 with 2 smaller attachments stapled at left edge, also initialed 3 times by each. Hollywood, California, 1958 November 4. Standard AFTRA contract for Astor's appearance on a TV episode, "The Return of Ansel Gibbs," for Playhouse 90, on November 27, 1958, with attached rider stipulating co-star billing for Astor and defining her compensation. MARY ASTOR (1906-1987) had a successful silent screen career, costarring with John Barrymore in Beau Brummell (1923) and Don Juan (1926). Her career was threatened by tabloid scandals in the 1930s, including a very contentious divorce, but she moved on to even greater film success in the talking era. She won the 1941 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying chain-smoking concert pianist Sandra Kovak in Warner Bros.' The Great Lie, which starred Bette Davis. That same year, she costarred with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon. She wrote five novels; her autobiography and subsequent film memoir were both best sellers. LEO LEFCOURT, a Hollywood lawyer and theatrical agent, procured the rights to the popular Twilight Episode "The Hitch-hiker," from author Lucile Fletcher, after prior offers by Rod Serling had been rejected. Two filing holes at top header affecting "CBS" and "NETWORK". For staples at left margin. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
