MARY BRIAN
Image of Bryan in floral dress, resting head and arms on the back of a chair, signed in person for collector Saul Goodman
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Mary Brian". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: February 13, 1937. Mary Brian (1908-2002, born Louise Dantzler), an American leading lady and one of the best liked actors in Hollywood during the silent age, got her start as Wendy Darling in Peter Pan (1924) after appearing in a beauty contest the previous year. This role landed her a contract with Paramount, and she went on to appear in over 70 films between 1924 and 1927, and starred opposite Gary Cooper in Paramount's first all-talkie, The Virginian (1929). She gave a memorable performance as W. C. Fields' daughter in The Man on the Flying Trapeze (1935), and co-starred with Cary Grant in The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss (1936). She made few films after 1937, but was hardly dormant: touring with stage shows and entertaining troops during World War IU. She later reappeared in low budget movies and television, including a recurring role as mother Janet Archer in Meet Corliss Archer (1954). Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Edges and corners creased. Edges lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
