MARY CARLISLE
Vintage photo, leaning on the arm of a sofa, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Mary Carlisle/August 3, 1936". B/w, 8x10. Double weight publicity photo for MGM. Collector's ink stamp on verso confirms signature date. Mary Carlisle (b. 1912) broke into film in 1930, playing leading roles from 1933 until she retired ten years later. Alternating between starring and supporting roles, Carlisle was the love interest of Bing Crosby in 3 films (College Humor,1933; Double or Nothing, 1937; and Dr. Rhythm, 1938). After leaving films she managed the Elizabeth Arden salon in Beverly Hills. As of mid-2011, Carlisle and Barbara Kent are the only two surviving "WAMPAS Baby Stars". Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, Fine condition.
