Price: $550.00
MARY ELLEN CHASE. Autograph Letter signed: "Mary Ellen
Chase", 3p, 5½x7¼. On personal letterhead. Northampton, Massachusetts,
November 12, no year. To "Dear Mr. Denis". In full: " I'm
so sorry to have delayed my reply to your letter of the 4th of November but I've
been writing the final chapter of a new novel, just done, and I fear I've just
-letters go. Of course I know The City Club. I've been there often with friends.
I don't wonder you are proud of it. Yes, of course, I'll write your sketch,
which I assume from studying the Guide is a matter of some 500 words -- few for
my native State, but will make them do. There's just one provision. If you have
to have it before December 15th, I really can't. I'm going to California for
three weeks on next Monday, and I'm honestly so written out at the moment that I
just can't touch a pencil, except for the inevitable grocery list, for a month!
If that date will do, I'll be happy to do it for you. Most truly yours, Address
until December 1st. The Thacher School, Ojai, California." Chase
(1887-1973) wrote novels (Mary Peters, 1934; Windswept, 1941),
children's books (The Story of Lighthouses, 1965) and three
autobiographical works, all of which carried the strong regional favor
of her native Maine. She also wrote biblical studies (Life and
Language in the Old Testament, 1955). One word smudged on third page.
Otherwise, fine condition.
