Price: $440.00
MARY ELLEN CHASE. Autograph Letter signed: "Mary Ellen
Chase". 2p, 6¼x7½. On personal letterhead. Windswept, Petit Manan Point,
Millbridge, Maine, August 19, no year. To "Dear Mr. Roberts".
Signed on page 2. In full: "At last the speech is going in full to
Miss Osgood. Tell her to cut it as she sees fit. I'm sorry not to have done it
before, but it really meant hours in getting it in shape - and I confess
to a program of Works and Days all summer. I have exemplified all the
[illegible] except bee culture, and perhaps may claim even to that one
since I have been stung often in other agricultural pursuits!! I have no
mind at all any more, but - what hands! Yours,". Chase (1887-1973)
wrote novels (Mary Peters, 1934; Windswept, 1941),
children's books (The Story of Lighthouses, 1965) and three
autobiographical works, all of which carried the strong regional favor
of her native Maine. She also wrote biblical studies (Life and
Language in the Old Testament, 1955). Ink note (unknown hand) at top of
first page. Slightly creased. Mounting tape remnants at top of page 1 and bottom
of page 2. Page two has been slightly trimmed at bottom. Otherwise, fine
condition.
