MARY FRANCES SCOTT-SIDDONS
Apparently asked to recommend a former agent, the actress can't find
much good to say about him.
Autograph Letter signed: "M. F. Scott-Siddons", 1 page, 4½x7.
No place, 1884 December 27. To "Sir", in full: "Mr. Eyre
was never with me in the capacity in which you are thinking of employing him. He
was merely a sort of advance agent under my business manager, who if I remember
rightly was not very satisfied with him, but I believe he never had any fault to
find with Mr. Eyre in regards honesty. His circumstances must be much changed
since I last heard of him - some 2 or 3 years ago, when he was in a state of
utter impecuniosity. Mr. Machialion, my manger, could have given more
thorough information, but he is on Australian tour. I am Sir, truly yours".
Stage actress Mary Frances Scott-Siddons (1844-1896), who was born in
India, made her professional debut as Lady McBeth in Nottingham before
appearing in London in 1867 as Rosalind in As You Like It. She
then made her American debut in Boston and then played Rosalind in New York
City. Scott-Siddons, who appeared in six Broadway plays (from Twelfth
Night in 1869 to 'Twixt Axe and Crown in 1870), joined Austin
Daly's company in New York in 1869. Toned with multiple mailing folds. Left
edge frayed. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
