FDC celebrating D'Aviation de la Champagne (Week-long event from August 22 to 29, 1909), postmarked Hammondsport, New York, December 30, 1980, 28-c USAirmal stamp (honoring Blanche Stuart Scott) affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Mary Gaffaney (b.1926) began flying at the age of 18, going on to become a five-time national winner and two-time world's winner of the Women's Aerobatic Championship. Originally from New Orleans, Gaffaney moved with her family to Miami, Florida where she became the state's first helicopter pilot. She is also the first female skywriter in the nation. A master air pilot, Gaffaney owned and operated the Kendall Flying School at Tamiami Airport. Lightly creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
